A Romantic Oceanfront Wedding at Villa la Joya in Playa del Carmen | Amanda & Tanner

A Romantic Oceanfront Wedding at Villa la Joya in Playa del Carmen | Amanda & Tanner

Amanda and Tanner’s wedding at Villa la Joya in Playa del Carmen shows exactly how a destination wedding in the Riviera Maya should feel.

Their day moved from a ceremony on the villa’s grand entrance stairs to an oceanfront reception by the pool, finishing with a full night of celebration under the lights. One location, ocean views, and a wedding that flows naturally from one moment to the next, without stress, without rushing, and without overcomplicating the experience.

A Ceremony at the Entrance of Villa la Joya

Amanda and Tanner's ceremony was set on the grand entrance stairs of Villa la Joya, where the villa’s architecture created a striking and intimate backdrop.

Soft white and green floral arrangements framed the steps, bringing in natural texture while keeping the overall look clean and elevated. Black ceremony chairs added a subtle contrast against the light stone, tying into the couple’s modern design palette.

One of the most emotional moments of the ceremony was Amanda’s walk down the aisle with her father. Carrying a bouquet of sculptural white florals with soft greenery, she looked polished and in love.

As Amanda and Tanner stood together exchanging vows, framed by the villa’s arches and florals, the ceremony felt grounded, personal, and beautifully composed.

A Celebration Rooted in Meaning

Amanda and Tanner’s story began in university, where they met and built a relationship that has now spanned more than ten years.

Their proposal reflected that same connection.

“After a long day of driving, hiking, and sightseeing in Maui, Tanner proposed on the beach on the way back to our hotel,” Amanda shared. “It was only fitting that we also got married close to the beach.”

Choosing the Riviera Maya for their wedding came just as naturally.

“We love Riviera Maya and have gone on many vacations there. Mexico is fun, easy, and the weather is always beautiful. It was an easy choice.”

A destination wedding also gave them something more important than logistics.

“Doing a destination wedding meant we got to spend more time with our guests before and after the wedding day. It made everything feel less stressful and allowed us to really enjoy it.”

A Design That Felt Personal and Refined

Amanda’s vision was clear from the beginning.

“I wanted something unique but also timeless and elegant,” she shared. “We chose white and green florals with more interesting shapes and paired them with white drapery and black accents for a modern, tropical feel.”

That vision carried through every detail.

Organic floral arrangements added movement and texture, while soft linens and layered fabrics kept the look cohesive. The black accents, from ceremony chairs to table details, added contrast and gave the design a subtle edge.

Nothing felt overdone. Everything felt intentional.

An Oceanfront Reception by the Pool

Following the ceremony, guests gathered on the terrace overlooking the Caribbean Sea for a reception set beside the pool.

Long banquet tables created a shared, welcoming layout that encouraged conversation and connection. Neutral linens, flowing textures, and lush floral centerpieces carried the ceremony’s aesthetic into the evening.

Each place setting was clean and considered, with delicate glassware, gold flatware, and black ribbon accents that tied everything together.

The head table, framed by florals with the ocean just beyond, became a natural focal point as guests settled in for the evening.

From Golden Hour to Celebration

As the light shifted, so did the energy of the day.

Guests gathered with drinks in hand as the sky softened over the Caribbean. The transition from dinner into celebration happened naturally, with conversation, movement, and music building throughout the space.

One of the standout moments of the evening was the champagne tower, where Amanda and Tanner celebrated surrounded by sparks, cheers, and the full attention of their guests.

A Night Under the Fairy Lights

As night fell, string lights illuminated the reception space, casting a warm glow across the tables and reflecting in the pool.

From above, the scene felt complete. Guests gathered together, the ocean stretching into the dark, and the villa glowing under the Riviera Maya sky.

The dance floor quickly filled, and the energy carried through the night with music, laughter, and movement.

“The dance floor was definitely one of the highlights,” Amanda shared. “Everyone had such a great time, the music was so fun, and the drinks kept flowing all night.”

A Second Look and Late Night Moments

Later in the evening, Amanda changed into a second dress, bringing a playful and fashion forward edge to the celebration.

The structured silhouette added a bold contrast to her ceremony look and matched the shift in energy as the party continued.

Guests enjoyed late night treats, including an ice cream cart that added a fun and unexpected touch to the evening.

A Day That Felt Right from Start to Finish

With the support of Villa Planners, Amanda and Tanner were able to stay present throughout the day.

“Nancy kept us on track all day. I never felt stressed, rushed, or overwhelmed. I was able to soak in every minute.”

Even the weather, which had been a concern leading up to the wedding, turned out perfectly.

“I did stress about the rain prior to the wedding, but we had perfect weather.”

Thank You Amanda and Tanner, Congratulations

Alina & Matt’s Minimalist Wedding at Villa la Joya

Alina & Matt’s Minimalist Wedding at Villa la Joya

A modern, aesthetic celebration that turned into an unforgettable party

Alina and Matt’s wedding at Villa la Joya is proof that a wedding can be both beautifully minimal and wildly fun.

With a clean, intentional design and a focus on architecture, light, and atmosphere, their celebration started as an elevated, aesthetic experience, and evolved into a night no one wanted to end.

The ceremony: clean, architectural, and effortlessly impactful

Set at the villa’s grand entrance, the ceremony embraced Villa la Joya’s signature beauty — symmetry, stone textures, and layered archways.

Soft, low floral arrangements by Cherry Blossom Mexico lined the aisle, enhancing the space without overpowering it. The design felt refined and intentional, allowing the architecture to create that quiet, cinematic impact.

Alina’s sleek gown mirrored that same philosophy; modern, structured, and completely timeless.

Real moments, real energy

Minimalist doesn’t mean reserved.

From laughter during the ceremony to playful, unscripted reactions at the altar, Alina and Matt brought a sense of ease and personality that made every moment feel genuine.

It’s that balance of aesthetic and emotion that makes a wedding unforgettable.

Reception design: warm, open, and beautifully cohesive

The reception carried the same clean, curated aesthetic into a more relaxed, inviting atmosphere.

Long wooden tables styled with soft florals, candlelight, and neutral tones created a setting that felt intimate and elevated. Under palm trees and string lights, guests settled into a space that felt welcoming from the start.

The moments you can’t plan

As the evening unfolded, nature and timing added their own magic.

A rainbow appeared over the Caribbean, creating a surreal, once-in-a-lifetime backdrop for portraits, one of those moments no design plan could ever replicate.

And later, the rain arrived… not as a disruption, but as an unexpected enhancement. Umbrellas came out, candlelight reflected everywhere, and the atmosphere became even more intimate and cinematic.

And then… the party happened

As night fell, everything shifted.

The dance floor came alive with music by Plugin Audiovisual and live performance by Ariel Saxophonist bringing guests in, one by one, until it turned into a full celebration.

The glass dance floor over the pool became the center of it all, bold, unexpected, and completely unforgettable.

Kids ran through the space, guests laughed, drinks flowed, and the energy felt completely unfiltered in the best way.

A wedding that didn’t take itself too seriously

One of the best parts of the night?

The freedom.

From spontaneous dance floor moments to guests fully in the experience, this was a wedding that allowed people to be present, playful, and part of something real, not just watching it happen.

The perfect ending: fireworks over the Caribbean

And just when it felt like the night couldn’t go any further… it did.

Fireworks lit up the sky over the ocean as Alina and Matt took in the moment together. A deep breath after a full day of energy, laughter, and celebration.

The perfect ending to a wedding that balanced elegance with pure joy.

A wedding that defines the new era

Alina and Matt’s wedding reflects where destination weddings are heading.

Less excess. More intention.

Less structure. More experience.

Less “perfect.” More real.

Captured beautifully by Kait Jensen Photography, every image tells that story.

Thank you, Alina & Matt

A Romantic Oceanfront Wedding at Villa la Joya in Playa del Carmen | Jay & Lorraine

Jay and Lorraine’s wedding at Villa la Joya in Playa del Carmen, Mexico was elegant, timeless, and full of genuine joy. Set along the Caribbean Sea in the Riviera Maya, their destination wedding unfolded beautifully from beginning to end, with meaningful traditions and an atmosphere filled with laughter, tears, and celebration.

From an oceanfront ceremony to candlelit dinner tables overlooking the sea, moving speeches, joyful dancing, and fireworks lighting up the night sky, every moment of the day flowed naturally into the next.

Their celebration is a beautiful example of what a Villa la Joya destination wedding in Playa del Carmen can look like, combining an oceanfront ceremony, elegant reception spaces, and unforgettable moments by the Mexican Caribbean Sea.

A Ceremony by the Sea at Villa la Joya

Jay and Lorraine exchanged vows during a breathtaking oceanfront ceremony at Villa la Joya, surrounded by lush white florals and soft greenery with the ocean stretching out behind them.

The ceremony was deeply moving, with plenty of joyful tears shared between the couple, their family, and their closest friends. As they stood together on a unique circular ceremony platform framed by flowers and swaying palm trees, the moment felt intimate and incredibly meaningful.

One of the most special parts of the ceremony was the traditional lazo ritual, where a ceremonial cord was placed around the couple to symbolize unity and the joining of two lives as one.

With the sound of the waves and the warm ocean breeze, it was a ceremony that no one present will ever forget.

Cocktail Hour with Mariachi Music: Que vivan los novios!

Following the ceremony, guests gathered on the terrace for an oceanfront cocktail hour. Comfortable lounge seating created inviting spaces for conversation while guests enjoyed drinks and the breathtaking views.

A lively mariachi band added energy and a beautiful cultural touch to the celebration, filling the terrace with music as guests mingled and toasted the newlyweds.

A Candlelit Oceanfront Reception

Dinner took place on the terrace beside the sea, where long banquet tables created a beautiful family-style reception layout.

White linens, soft green napkins, and lush white and green floral centerpieces echoed the ceremony’s romantic palette. Tall candle cylinders and elegant glassware added warmth to the tables as evening settled over the Caribbean.

Overhead, chandeliers suspended from graceful arches illuminated the reception space, creating a magical atmosphere against the dark ocean horizon.

Speeches and Toasts from the Heart

It was an emotional day, and friends and family shared speeches and toasts that were every bit as touching as the ceremony itself.

Stories, memories, laughter, and more than a few tears filled the evening as loved ones reflected on Jay and Lorraine’s relationship and the journey that brought them to this day.

Wedding Reception Celebration: Dancing Under the Riviera Maya Sky

After dinner, the celebration moved to the dance floor where Jay and Lorraine shared their first dance on a custom monogram dance floor installed over the villa’s pool.

As the music played, the dance floor quickly filled with guests celebrating, hugging, laughing, and raising glasses together. The energy of the reception perfectly reflected the joy of the entire day.

Fireworks Over the Caribbean

One of the most unforgettable moments of the evening came during the cake cutting, when fireworks lit up the night sky over the Caribbean Sea behind the couple.

The dramatic display created a spectacular backdrop as Jay and Lorraine cut their wedding cake, turning the moment into a highlight of the celebration.

To close out the night, guests enjoyed a late-night churros cart with a glowing sign that read “Love is Sweet.” Fresh churros were served as everyone continued celebrating and soaking in the final moments of an incredible wedding at Villa la Joya.

Destination Wedding in Riviera Maya at Villa la Joya

Tamara and Garett first met 15 years ago as teenagers. Life carried them in different directions while she pursued her dream of competing at Miss Universe, traveling to more than 35 countries and proudly representing Canada at the 70th Miss Universe competition in Israel.

Years later, they reconnected.

“From the very beginning, it truly felt like fate.”

Their wedding at Villa la Joya reflected that same clarity and intention — modern, refined, and deeply personal, set against the Caribbean Sea in Riviera Maya, Mexico.

How did you meet, and how did he propose?

“Garett and I first met 15 years ago when we were just teenagers. We went on a few dates but ultimately remained friends as life carried us in different directions… After I returned from Miss Universe, Garett and I reconnected, and from the very beginning, it truly felt like fate.

From day one, our bond felt grounded, supportive, and perfectly aligned, built on shared values, ambition, and a mutual love for adventure.

The proposal was incredibly thoughtful and deeply personal. Garett planned a moment that genuinely reflected our relationship, intimate, heartfelt, and unmistakably ‘us.’ We celebrated in St. Barths, a chic, low-key luxury island in the French Caribbean.”

Why did you choose Riviera Maya, Mexico for your destination wedding?

“Riviera Maya has always held a special place in our hearts. We were drawn to its natural beauty, warm ocean, and effortless elegance. It’s also the first place we traveled together.

Even early in our relationship, we both talked about where we pictured getting married, and for both of us, it was a destination wedding, no exceptions.

We wanted a destination that felt luxurious yet relaxed, somewhere our guests could truly unwind, celebrate, and create unforgettable memories with us. Mexico offered the perfect blend of breathtaking scenery, incredible hospitality, and romantic atmosphere.”

What made you decide on Villa la Joya?

“Villa la Joya stood out to us immediately. Unbeknownst to one another, we had each saved the same venue. One day I said, ‘I found one, do you want to see?’ Garett replied, ‘I found one too.’ It was the exact same place. In that moment, we just knew it was meant to be.

The modern architecture, stunning ocean views, and intimate setting made it feel both grand and personal at the same time. The seamless indoor-outdoor flow overlooking the water made it the perfect canvas for our vision.”

The Ceremony: Over the Pool with the Caribbean as a Backdrop

They exchanged vows on Villa la Joya’s signature over-the-pool ceremony platform, the Caribbean Sea stretching endlessly behind them. Framed by soft white florals and open sky, the setting felt expansive yet deeply intimate.

“We were very emotional standing together during our ceremony, surrounded by our closest family and friends, with the ocean as our backdrop. It felt surreal, deeply meaningful, and incredibly present.”

Wedding Design: Modern, Minimal, and Intentional

“Our wedding theme was modern, elegant, and timeless with a touch of coastal sophistication. We embraced a classic black-and-white palette with subtle gold accents.

Our inspiration came from the natural beauty of Riviera Maya. We wanted the surroundings to shine while keeping the overall design clean, elevated, and romantic.”

Serpentine reception tables lined the terrace overlooking the ocean. White roses and soft greenery sat low between rows of glowing candles, allowing conversation to flow while the sea and sky framed the evening. Black accents added contrast and structure without overpowering the setting.

Bridal Fashion: Editorial, Refined, and Effortless

“My wedding dress was designed by Dovita Bridal… elegant, light, unique yet effortless for a beachside celebration.”

Her Dovita gown felt sculptural and refined from every angle. Crystal embellishment cascading down the open back caught the ocean light beautifully, while her crown subtly nodded to her pageant legacy without overpowering the modern silhouette.

For the reception, she changed into a Studio Minc mini with a sculpted bubble hem, leaning fully into the celebration. The shorter silhouette allowed her to move freely on the dance floor while keeping the look polished and fashion-forward.

The Reception: Celebration Over the Water

“The most emotional moment was our private first look… yet in that moment, it truly felt like we were seeing each other for the very first time.”

As night fell, the terrace transformed. A custom monogrammed dance floor extended over the pool, illuminated by string lights and dramatic dry fireworks.

Their first dance unfolded in a cinematic moment of light, reflection, and music — refined yet electric.

From above, the transformation was unmistakable. The ceremony platform and personalized dance floor created a floating stage for both vows and celebration, shifting seamlessly from dinner to full-scale party.

“Seeing everyone we love together, laughing, dancing, and celebrating us was truly magical.”

Is There Anything You Would Have Done Differently?

“Our wedding day was truly the best day of our lives. Everyone tells you to prepare for things to go wrong, but we believe the universe delivers something even better than you expect.

There wasn’t a single cloud in the sky. The day flew by, as all the most magical days do.”

Advice for Future Destination Brides

“Trust your vision and choose a venue that truly speaks to you. Equally important is investing in a great planner.

From day one, we told Luz from Mango Weddings, ‘We want to be guests at our own wedding,’ and she made it happen beautifully.

If you’re on the fence, this is your sign. A destination wedding is the way to go.”

They also shared creative advice — from unique guest book ideas like signing a racing helmet to taking dance lessons together to stay connected during planning.

“Most importantly, be present and enjoy every moment.”

A Destination Wedding at Villa la Joya in the Riviera Maya

A Destination Wedding at Villa la Joya in the Riviera Maya

At a glance: This real wedding at Villa la Joya in the Riviera Maya included a full Catholic ceremony, a private villa setting, a family-friendly celebration, and a late-night reception with live entertainment and fireworks.

We were honored to host Lilia and Felix’s wedding at Villa la Joya, welcoming their families and friends for a day that blended faith, celebration, and time spent together from first toast to farewell.

From the moment guests arrived, it was clear this would be a celebration meant to be shared. Guests of all ages settled in, children explored the grounds, conversations carried easily through the villa, and the pace felt calm and unforced. The day unfolded from first looks to final hugs and a classic car exit.

The Story of Lilia & Felix

Their journey began years ago at a mutual friend's party back in high school. It wasn’t a night of long conversations; instead, it started with simple eye contact across the room. A few days later, Felix reached out with a message, and as they say, the rest was history.

Fast forward through years of shared growth and milestones, including Lilia’s nursing school graduation. She thought she was heading to a photoshoot to celebrate her hard work as a new nurse, but Felix had a much bigger celebration in mind. He turned that graduation milestone into a life-changing surprise by proposing right there during the session.

The Ceremony

We watched as Lilia arrived in a horse-drawn carriage, wearing a full princess gown with a dramatic train and long veil. The wide ceremony aisle gave her space to move slowly and really take in the moment. Felix waited at the altar in a classic black tuxedo, surrounded by family and friends.

The ceremony took place overlooking the sea, framed by a rectangular floral arch that echoed the clean lines of the villa’s architecture.

The bridal party added softness and contrast to the setting, with blush gowns and sand-toned tuxedos that worked beautifully against the stone and greenery of the villa.

Lilia and Felix chose a full Catholic ceremony, including the lazo tradition. Faith and family were at the center of this moment. Guests sat close, children included, and the ceremony unfolded with intention and emotion.

This matters to many of the couples we host. Our space supports full religious ceremonies, without time limits or space constraints, so traditions and culture are never shortened or rushed.

THE Reception

As daylight faded, we moved into the reception spaces around the Villa la Joya pool. Lilia and Felix personalized the setting in white and gold, filling the space with white roses, candles, chandeliers and soft, twinkling lights.

A sweetheart table beneath string lights became a natural focal point, drawing guests in and setting a relaxed tone for the evening. A custom dance floor was installed directly over the pool for the couple’s first dance and the celebration that followed.

We loved watching this moment. As Lilia and Felix twirled beneath the lights, dry fireworks framed the scene and guests gathered around the pool, glasses raised, fully present. It was dramatic and romantic, one of those moments everyone remembers being part of.

For the reception, Lilia stepped into a sleek, curve-hugging gown, and Felix changed into a white dinner jacket as the evening shifted fully into party mode.

The Party

The night stayed lively and joyful.

Live entertainers, a DJ, robotic performers, and a 360 video booth kept guests on their feet. Champagne flowed. Late-night ice cream made its way through the crowd. Kids, parents, and grandparents danced together, creating the kind of multi-generational atmosphere that makes weddings feel deeply personal.

Fireworks lit up the Playa del Carmen sea as the celebration carried on. Some guests kicked off their shoes, others kept dancing. Conversations flowed, laughter filled the space, and family and friends raised glasses of champagne and tequila to toast the newlyweds.

This is one of the things we love most about hosting weddings at Villa la Joya. When everything happens in one private setting, the night finds its own rhythm.

The Goodbye

To close the evening, everyone gathered at the Villa la Joya entrance for a classic car exit. Friends and family lined the path as fireworks lit the night sky, sending Lilia and Felix off with cheers, hugs, and heartfelt good wishes.

It was a joyful and complete ending to a full day shared together.

Our Thanks and Best Wishes

From all of us at Villa la Joya, thank you to Lilia & Felix for trusting us with such an important celebration. We wish you a lifetime filled with partnership, shared adventures, and continued joy.

Looking back at their day, we’re reminded of how much intention went into their choices. Lilia and Felix told us they fell in love with the private, off-resort feel here, especially that old-world, "Tuscany castle" atmosphere that feels so unique by the sea. They chose to work with our Villa Planners team because they wanted that deep, local expertise.

We are also grateful to the incredible vendors who brought this wedding together with care, creativity, and professionalism:
