Eileen and Patrick have basically grown up together.
The two met in high school back in 2010, started dating before college, and after 12 years together finally celebrated their wedding at Villa la Joya surrounded by all of their favorite people. Incredible ocean views, a divine dinner, late-night churros, Talavera-inspired details, and one unforgettable “flower girl” moment involving beers instead of petals. Honestly, we loved this wedding.
Why Eileen & Patrick Chose a Destination Wedding in Mexico
The couple traveled from Ohio to the Riviera Maya looking for a destination wedding with genuine Mexican influence woven throughout the experience. From the music and menu to the colorful design details, everything felt thoughtful, personal, and fun. This was definitely not another cookie-cutter resort wedding.
Why choose a wedding in the Riviera Maya, Mexico? Patrick and I live in Ohio. We knew we wanted our wedding to have Mexican influence and that was a bit difficult to do where we live. Riviera Maya was the perfect place where our guests could experience something new without traveling too far, we'd have plenty of talented vendors to choose from to include the Mexican details, and of course the stunning views.
How did you decide that Villa La Joya was the right venue? I happened to come across Villa La Joya on social media and fell in love instantly. We visited the website, watched videos, and decided to book without visiting in person and before we got a wedding planner. We just knew it would be everything we were looking for.
Elegant Fashion & Talavera-Inspired Wedding Design
Eileen’s bridal gown was sleek, sexy, and timeless, with a unique tie-up back that we absolutely loved. Smooth white satin and a classic black tuxedo always works. Her bouquet added the perfect soft contrast, with light, fresh colors that photographed beautifully against the tropical setting and white architecture of Villa la Joya.
The floral design throughout the day was gorgeous. Soft blues, blush tones, creamy whites, eucalyptus, and delicate lavender accents gave everything a romantic and relaxed feel. The Talavera-inspired details showed up throughout the wedding design, including the beautiful seating chart display that immediately set the tone for the celebration. The blue and white pattern was playful, colorful, and unmistakably Mexican while still keeping everything elegant and refined.
A Romantic Ceremony at Villa la Joya
The ceremony took placer on the front steps of Villa la Joya. The clean white architecture, soft pastel florals, and afternoon sun created such a beautiful setting for Eileen and Patrick to finally say “I do” after more than a decade together.
One of the most emotional moments of the ceremony was the Catholic lazo tradition, symbolizing the union of the couple as they officially began this next chapter together.
And yes, we absolutely loved their last-minute “flower girl” decision. As this was an adults-only wedding, there were no adorable flower girls to be found. Instead, one of the cousins walked down the aisle handing out beers, which honestly matched the fun energy of this wedding perfectly. It got a huge laugh from guests and made the ceremony feel personal and memorable.
Cocktail Hour & Oceanfront Reception Under the Sky Tents
After exchanging their vows, Eileen and Patrick welcomed their guests to the cocktail hour in the Villa la Joya gardens by the sea. Comfortable lounge seating, ocean views, great drinks, and a relaxed atmosphere made it feel like the kind of wedding where guests instantly settle in and enjoy themselves.
The reception layout was designed for a night that flowed naturally. Round, light-wood tables, layered pastel florals, candlelight, and subtle Talavera details tied everything together perfectly without feeling overdone. Their sweetheart table overlooking the ocean was another favorite detail. The cozy bench seating was perfect for sneaking little moments together between dinner, speeches, and dancing.
As the sun went down, the entire reception transformed. The clear-top sky tents glowed with candlelight and twinkling strands overhead, creating an incredible atmosphere for dinner, speeches, and dancing by the ocean. Villa la Joya always looks beautiful at night, but this setup was something special. The reflections across the pool, the lighting, the music, and the packed dance floor completely transformed the villa.
The toasts brought both laughter and tears as family and friends celebrated Eileen and Patrick’s love and life together and everything they had built side by side.
Later in the evening, Eileen changed into the cutest reception dress and fully switched into party mode. Short, fun, and perfect for dancing, it matched the energy of the night completely. You could tell nobody was ready for the night to end, including the bride and groom, who admitted afterward that they easily could have kept the party going another hour.
