Real Wedding in Mexico: The Elegancia of a Playa del Carmen Wedding at Villa la Joya

What was your wedding theme or inspiration?
Inspiration: Bring "Chicago to the beach."  We basically wanted to bring a "classic Chicago banquet" wedding and put it on a beach.

Theme: Elegant, dreamy, romantic, flowers, lights, candles, and chandeliers. Everything in white with pops of soft pinks, blush, sage, and gold.

Cindy and Scott’s Happily Ever After Love Story: The Wedding Chapter

Like many classic love stories, Cindy and Scott’s began with an introduction through mutual friends playing Cupid. Maura and Derrick set up planned meetings with the couple until Scott FINALLY asked Cindy on a date. Cupid’s arrow hit its mark and as a result, we were delighted to welcome this lovely couple to Villa la Joya for their Playa del Carmen wedding. We were happy to meet the matchmakers too, Maura and Derrick were honored members of the wedding party. Romantic love, family love in abundance, and the love of long-lasting friendship are all you need for a perfect wedding day.

When planning a wedding, don’t forget to take a step back and envision the whole. The details coming together to create the big picture of your vision. The small details of this wedding by the sea were lovely, the soft touch of the flowers, the elegant menus, the buttons down the back of Cindy’s breathtaking bridal gown.

Perusing the photos by Moni Adri, what really caught our eye were the panoramic shots of the ceremony and reception set-up at Villa la Joya. From the garden aisle to the transparent sky tent with the floating chandeliers, the dance floor over the pool and the fireworks that lit up the night sky, moments captured from afar that reflect the warm, welcoming and elegant wedding vibe of Cindy and Scott.

Why did you choose Mexico for your destination wedding?

I (Cindy) grew up in Chicago and Scotty grew up in Michigan, and we didn't feel it was fair to have one side of the family to travel for a wedding so we thought, 'why not have both families travel to somewhere we love?!' Plus we both have smaller families so we didn't think we'd have many guests traveling for our wedding. We thought we'd have 50-80 guests...we had 120! We feel so, so loved.

What made you decide to get married at Villa La Joya Playa del Carmen?

We felt like Villa La Joya captured us as a couple the best. It was elegant, romantic, and beautiful with breathtaking views in every corner. We basically wanted to bring a "classic Chicago banquet wedding" and place it on a beach :) Also, not to mention the STUNNING view! We have been to so many weddings and we have never seen a venue like this before...We were eyeing this venue before we even got engaged! We just knew right away it was for us.

What was your favorite/most emotional or funniest moment of your wedding day?

Cindy's Favorite/most emotional wedding moment: Walking down the aisle to Scotty, with all my favorite people surrounding me, and hearing the waves crashing in the ocean. It was a rainy day but for that split moment, the sun was shining during our ceremony & we truly feel like it was our loved ones, who were watching down on us from heaven, that helped make that moment even more magical <3

Scotty's Favorite/most emotional moment: Other than seeing my beautiful bride walk down the aisle and marrying my best friend, I would say it was when I had a moment to myself to take in the venue. I had never seen the venue in person until our wedding day. Cindy got to see it last year for menu tasting. But when I was inside the condo, waiting to do our first look on the balcony, I remember having a moment to myself and really taking in everything that we had planned, come to life. And just taking in the beautiful venue from the top looking down - it was breathtaking.

Destination wedding tips: Anything you would have done differently?

Truly nothing! Everything went the way it was supposed to be and we loved it all! I guess if we had to say....we wish we didn't rely on a "technology based" guest book. We thought an "audio guest book" was so fun, cool and different that we didn't think about having any technical issues... Since it rained on our wedding day, the phone book got unplugged to hide from the rain and it stopped working the rest of the wedding.... We lost what would have been a special memory/gift for us to look back on. It would have been nice to at least have a handwritten guest book as a backup.

Any advice you’d like to share with other destination wedding brides?

A lot is going on that day and it will go by SO SO quickly, you will forget to do simple things like drink water! It is SO important to hydrate & drink water!!!! You will thank yourself in the morning ;)

Thank you for having us and for making our wedding dreams come true. I am not exaggerating when I say that every day we wake up and wish we could do it all over again. We absolutely loved our wedding & we are so grateful for Villa La Joya! We hope in the future we could stop for a quick few mins just to reminisce :)
